Background of the Study:
Women's political participation is crucial to ensuring that their voices are heard in decision-making processes, particularly in a democratic society. In Nigeria, women have historically been underrepresented in political leadership roles, facing significant barriers due to patriarchal societal structures, cultural norms, and discriminatory practices. Bauchi, a state in northeastern Nigeria, presents a unique context where women face both traditional gender roles and modern challenges in accessing political opportunities. Despite constitutional guarantees of gender equality and women's empowerment, women's political participation in Bauchi remains limited, with few women occupying key political positions (Abdullahi & Habibu, 2024).

Women's participation in politics is not only a matter of ensuring equal representation but also closely tied to the protection and promotion of human rights. Political participation allows women to advocate for policies that protect their rights and address issues such as gender-based violence, access to education, healthcare, and economic empowerment. This study seeks to assess the extent of women's political participation in Bauchi and its impact on the protection of their human rights. It will also explore the barriers that women face in entering and succeeding in politics, and how these barriers can be overcome.

Statement of the Problem:
In Bauchi, the low level of women’s political participation and representation remains a significant challenge to achieving gender equality and effective human rights protection. While there have been some improvements in the involvement of women in politics at the national level, these gains have not fully translated into local contexts like Bauchi. Cultural beliefs, limited access to resources, and lack of political will have impeded women’s ability to participate meaningfully in political processes. As a result, the human rights of women, particularly in the areas of health, education, and economic opportunity, continue to be inadequately addressed. There is a need to explore the barriers to women's political participation and assess how increasing their involvement in politics can lead to better protection of their rights.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the level of women’s political participation in Bauchi, Bauchi State.

  2. To evaluate the relationship between women's political participation and the protection of their human rights in Bauchi.

  3. To identify the barriers that hinder women’s political participation in Bauchi and propose strategies to overcome them.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the level of women’s political participation in Bauchi, Bauchi State?

  2. How does women’s political participation impact the protection of their human rights in Bauchi?

  3. What are the barriers to women’s political participation in Bauchi?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. There is a significant relationship between women’s political participation and the protection of their human rights in Bauchi.

  2. Cultural and socio-economic barriers significantly hinder women's political participation in Bauchi.

  3. Increased political participation by women in Bauchi leads to greater advocacy for the protection of women's human rights.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study will focus on women in Bauchi, Bauchi State, and will assess their participation in local and state-level politics. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with women politicians, local government officials, and women activists. Limitations include the potential difficulty in accessing certain groups of women, particularly those in rural areas, due to cultural or logistical barriers.

Definitions of Terms:
